About BlueCross BlueShield of North Dakota

Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota introduced the idea of prepaid health care to the state in the 1940s. After the Great Depression, many North Dakotans were unable to pay for adequate health care, and some hospitals struggled to stay open as a result. In March 1940, Blue Cross of North Dakota was born. The North Dakota Hospital Service Association, organized by civic leaders with support from St. Luke’s and St. John’s hospitals in Fargo, began operation in the First National Bank building with 9,000 members. Six years later, the North Dakota Physicians Service, a Blue Shield plan, was organized to cover the patient’s cost for physician care.
