Compare Health Insurance Costs by State

What you pay for health insurance depends heavily on where you live. Carriers, networks, and prices all change at the state line. Pick your state to see the plans and costs available in your area.

Each state guide covers the carriers selling there, the plan types available, and what coverage typically costs.

What drives the price

Why health insurance costs differ by state

Where you live sets your price

Insurers price plans by rating area, so two people the same age can pay very different premiums in different states — and sometimes in different counties of the same state. How many carriers compete locally is one of the largest factors in what you pay.

Carriers and networks vary

Not every insurance company sells in every state, and the provider networks they offer differ from one market to the next. The plans you can actually buy depend on your state and county.

Marketplace rules are state-specific

Some states run their own health insurance marketplace; others use the federal one. State rules can also affect enrollment windows and what assistance is available to residents.

Your doctors may not be in every plan

Provider networks are built market by market. A plan that includes your preferred hospital or specialist in one area may have no equivalent in another, which is why checking who is in-network matters as much as comparing the premium.

Good to know

Common questions

Can I buy a health plan from another state?

Generally no. Health insurance is regulated state by state, and plans are sold based on where you live. If you move to a different state, that move is a qualifying life event that lets you enroll in a plan there outside of open enrollment.

Why is health insurance more expensive in some states?

Premiums reflect local medical costs, how much competition there is among carriers, and the health of the people enrolled in that market. States with few competing insurers and higher local care costs tend to have higher premiums.

Does where I live inside my state matter?

Yes. States are divided into rating areas, and premiums can differ noticeably between them. Plan availability and provider networks can also change from county to county, which is why quotes start with your ZIP code rather than just your state.

What happens to my coverage if I move?

Moving to a new state ends your eligibility for your current plan and opens a special enrollment period, generally 60 days, to choose a new one. It is worth comparing before the move so coverage does not lapse in between.
